AMT Star Trek USS Reliant
Kit# 8766
(ww.ertl.com)

Instructions and Reference Pictures are available
This was the first model I every purchased. I had a part time job and drivers licenses, so I was able to drive to the “Big Town” where they had a hobby lobby and this was the model I picked out. I have yet to finish it though even though its been 18 years ago. I was frustrated by not being able to get a smooth texture when I painted it. Now I know why and I have an airbrush so I am seriously taking a look at redoing it. I will have to strip it down.
Open Box Review
It has been a long time since I first opened the box but I remember thinking wow this is huge. The sauce section was big. I didn’t think it would be that big. The detail looked good, but I was not sure about the accuracy, but I have never been in to hype detailing. But you should be able to look at it know what the ship is.

Planning
Strip the model down and get ready to repaint it. I plan on doing a white base color and then do a bit of light shaded aztecing. I don’t trust my skills at taking it apart to light it but that would be cool. Other than I don’t have any other plans.

Things I have learned from this kit so far.
Don’t use gloss white spray paint as a primer. The other paint will not stick to it.
Tape where the model joins so you don’t have to scrap off the joints to get it to glue well.
Work In progress Shots
This was the state it was in when unboxed it to take the pictures and scan the instructions. As you can see gloss white makes a crappy primer, the color I tried brush on would just streak. I need to redo some of the seams. |
